Throughout his career Richard Smyllie has been entrusted by a wide diversity of clients with facilitating a range of risk assessments on some of the largest process engineering projects around the world.
About
Richard Smyllie had a key technical role in the Piper Alpha Disaster Public Inquiry and its ensuing litigation

Coronovirus
In these unprecedented times major projects still need to proceed. They still have to pass through the normal ‘safety gates’ such as HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA. RS Process Safety has successfully completed a number of virtual studies by videoconferencing.
Clients
Culzean Field Development
RS Process Safety and Richard Smyllie has successfully led the HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA studies for the Maersk Oil Culzean Field Development project. This covered the preliminary design in the UK and detailed design in Singapore. The field is a high temperature high pressure gas condensate field in the north sea. It came onstream in 2019 and represented the largest investment in the north sea for 25 years.

Introducing RS Process Safety
RS Process Safety is a process safety consultancy recently set up by Richard Smyllie who has over thirty five years experience in the process industries. He has previously worked for Amec and its predecessors Entec and Cremer and Warner. His knowledge and experience in process safety came from his extensive involvement with the Piper Alpha Disaster Public Enquiry (over twenty five years ago) and the ensuing litigation.
Over these years he has been entrusted by several high profile clients with undertaking a variety of types of risk assessment on some of the largest process engineering projects around the world.
The majority of Richard’s work can be summarised as enhancing the safety of large projects which have strategic importance not only to individual clients and companies but also to countries. This can usefully be given the term Strategic Asset Risk Assessment (SARA). In short a major accident or incident involving some of these assets would have a disastrous impact on a company’s reputation and finances or even those of individual countries. An event that shuts down a process for only a few days could have multi million pound implications and if allowed to extend for a long duration could impact on a company’s share price or even a country’s GDP.
